Analysis of Five Aggregates

Pancha Skanda is the aggregation of pancha skanda: corporeality, feeling, sensation, mental formations, and consciousness. These pancha skanda combine to produce Pancha-Upadhanaskandha. They are also known as aggregated corporeality, aggregated feelings, aggregated sensations, aggregated mental formations, and aggregated consciousness.

According to the venerable Rerukane Chandravimala’s book Chaturya Satya, the noble truth of sorrow is conveyed as five aggregates (Panchopadanaskanda).

The Mass of Corporeality

A group of elements that come to another form or perish in the same form due to cold or warm temperatures without existing at all times is called corporeality. Corporeality can be divided into 28 types.

The Mass of Feeling

Everything that is felt by the mind and can be felt by the mind is called a “goal.” When a mind is born with the purpose of anything, the nature of being good or bad, moderate or tasteful that belongs to that purpose is called pain.

The Mass of Sensation

A sensation means a feeling or a sense. The part of nature that is known separately based on characteristics like shape, color, smell, etc. is called a “sense.

The Mass of Mental Formations

Mental norms based on intention are defined as “mental formations.”

The Mass of Consciousness

Consciousness is the name applied to the mind itself. All the senses used in the world by various names, such as seeing and hearing, are the mass of consciousness. Since all these are in mass, the word mass is prefixed to the name.

Individual psycho-physical relationships according to panch skandha (Five aggregates)

According to the Maha Tanha Sankhya Sutra, the individual is created by understanding the Pancha Skanda or the Pancha Upadanaskandaya.

In the investigation of the initial question part of the book titled The Debate of the King Milinda, it was pointed out that there is a practice of numerical signs that when corporeality, feeling, sensation, mental formations, and consciousness (pancha skanda) come together.

Namely, it is evident that the person is created by the union of these pancha skanda.  Corporeality, feeling, sensation, mental formations, and consciousness are taken as Rupa. The same is true in the psycho-physical relationship.

These five masses (pancha skanda) must come together to form a person. Diseases do not occur just because there is a Panchaskandha and by adding the clinging (Upadana), diseases arise.

Key Features of Buddhist Counselling and Therapy

Dr. H. S. Nishanka has presented a Buddhist psychotherapy method with six steps. By using those six steps, he has been able to successfully deliver his services to the clients. They are;

  • Communication
  • Seeing the patient
  • Development of awareness of pain
  • Seeing and feeling the mind
  • Noble cathartic (Ariya Virechakaya)
  • Rehabilitate the patient

Here, it is important to take each aspect and talk about how the correct understanding of the client’s psycho-physical relationship affects the success of those aspects/steps.

Communication (parts of data processing)

  • Here, when you see sadness on the patient’s face, you should talk about the suffering of patient. There, the mental and physical relationship is important to identify the suffering of the client through the image and to explain the suffering of Pancha Skanda.

  • Here it is pointed out that the disease is not permanent. Then the client should have a good understanding before explaining the condition of Panch Skandha (five elements) to the client.
  • The study of the body when the client comes and handles his body, about his pains during communication with him, about how he has taken different signals, what are the other roots of sin of mental concomitants , (concentration and loving kindness) by understanding well his character and stage of disease.
  • According to his analysis of Pancha Skanda, a familiarization exercise can be prescribed for a Kayanupassana (critique of body) which lays the foundation for the second step by choosing the character.
  • Even understanding of chaitasika (sanskara) can tell whether he has established trust with the client.

Seeing the patient’s body – (Kayanupassana)

Here the client is directed to Kayanupassana meditation. Identifying his character is very important here. For that, the study of his corporeality, mental concomitants, sensation etc. is very important. Accordingly, he can choose the suitable Kayanupassana meditation.

Development of consciousness about pain – (Vedananupassana)

It is very important to understand what your feeling mentality is. Accordingly, the change in his enjoyment of recommending Vedananupassana can also be seen in the mass of corporeality. Thus, after knowing his consciousness about it, he can understand the impermanence of pain.

There, too, whether the sensation called the impermanence of pain is correctly understood, the signal can be understood in the psychological study.

Seeing and Feeling Mind – (Chettanu Passanava)

Man is a psycho-physiological foundation. Chitta- Chaitasika also affects the corporeality. A good example of this is that you can often see friendly people being bright and pleasant and hateful people showing unpleasant traits.

Making the client to see the mind is in this step. Then it becomes very important to study what kind of mind is connected with his mind. That way, one can understand what kind of sin one has.

Noble cathartic or Ariya Virechakaya – (Dhammanupassana)

This is where mind clearing takes place. For this, knowledge of norms of mental concomitants is very important. In this case, character analysis is very important to understand the dirt.

Bojjhanga (factors of wisdom) should be grown for prevention and subjugation of impurities. A study of the client’s pentagram is also important to know about their growth.

 Patient Rehabilitation

The first client should be rehabilitated to recover from treatment. His psycho-physiological analysis can tell if he has reached the level to be rehabilitated.

Recommendations and Summary

Man has a psycho-physical relationship. It is divided into 5 main masses as Panchaskanda in Buddhist analysis. But these 5 masses (pancha skanda) work in conjunction with each other. Dr. HS Nishanka has introduced a method of Buddhist psychotherapy in order to identify the client’s illness, find out its cause, find out how to eliminate it, and eliminate it.

In order to follow it, it is seen in the above study that understanding the psycho-physical relationships and actions of Panch Skandha is very important. Therefore, using Pancha Skandha Vigraha (analyzing of five elements) confirms that accurate understanding of the client’s psycho-physical relationship leads to successful counseling/therapy.
